Individual Workout

Skill development is a year round process.  If you want to be a high level player you cannot count on just practice time to get you there.

Stationary Ball Handling (30 seconds each)


Quick Crossover
Quick Behind the Back
Quick Inside-Out Crossover
Inside-Out Crossover - Behind the Back

Moving Ball Handling (3 sets each)


X- Drill - Start where the baseline and lane line come together.  Sprint dribble from baseline to elbow the retreat dribble back to the baseline.  Once at the baseline dribble behind the back and then sprint dribble to the opposite elbow.  Repeat this process continuously for 30 seconds.

Full Court Change of Speed - Starting on the baseline take three sprint dribble then 2 walking dribbles.  Continue till you reach the other end then repeat back.  Really work on changing from walk to sprint as fast as possible.  Up and back is one set.

Chill Drill - The chill drill starts in the corner of the court and uses the whole perimeter of the half court.  From the baseline corner to half court you will perform 3 inside outs at half court you will spin and dribble along the half court line half way between the sideline and the center circle you will retreat dribble then explode right in the middle of the court you will do any double move you like then at the opposite corner where half court meets the other sideline you will do a spin move then attack the basket performing a behind the back around the 3 point line.

Shooting 


7 spot shot fake 1 dribble pull ups - Make 3 going each way from each spot.  42 made shots total.  After shot fake take attacking dribble towards basket then pull up for a jumper

7 spot shot fake fly by jumper - Make 3 from each spot -  Shot fake from the 7 spots about 15 feet away after the shot fake immitally go into a jumper as if the defender flew by on your shot fake.

7 spot shot fake 1 dribble sideways - Make 3 going each way from each spot.  42 made shots total.  After shot fake take one dribble to the side for a jumper.

Make 25 free throws.

USA vs Lithuania

This was almost a carbon copy of the game vs. Slovenia.  Once again Steph Curry was in early foul trouble.  Once again James Harden went scoreless in the first half only to erupt in the third.  In both games the US had a slim half time lead only to blow the game open in third.  Lithuania ran some really nice offense to post on their guards to take advantage of the fact that the US guards were in foul trouble.  With Spain going out yesterday it looks like no one will really challenge the US.

Individual Workout

As a coach at the D3 level I am not allowed to conduct individual workouts with my players during the fall.  Below is a sample of one of the workouts I give our team to use on their own time to improve their game.  This is an easy and quick workout that can be completed in about 30 minutes if you are going full speed the whole time. 

Ball Handling Warm Up (30 seconds each)
  • Right hand pound dribble 
  • Left hand pound dribble
  • Right hand v-dribble 
  • Left hand v-dribble 
  • Right hand push pull 
  • Left hand push pull 
  • Continuous crossover to behind the back 
  • Figure 8
Half Court Dribble Series (2 times each from both right and left side)
  • 2 dribbles to the basket 
  • Crossover attack the basket
  • In and out attach the basket
  • Behind the back attack the basket
  • Spin move attack the basket
  • Middle floater
  • Pull up 15 foot jumper
  • Pull up 3 point jumper 
Catch and Shoot (7 spots)
  • Make two in a row 15 footer

Spain vs France

The game between Spain and France featured a number of NBA players and a number of very skilled big men.  With the Gasol brothers, Boris Diaw, and Serge Ibaka there was no shortage of big men who can play away from the basket.  Both teams ran a lot of sets out of the horns set to take advantage of these skilled big men.

USA vs. Slovenia


The first half of basketball was not the cleanest half of basketball the US has played in the tournament.  Curry picked up 3 early fouls and they did not shoot the ball well (38%).  Offensive rebounds and converting off turnovers kept the US in the lead.  The US picked up the effort defensively in the 3rd leading to 37 points in the quarter.  The biggest change for the US was the play of James Harden who scored 12 in the 3rd after going scoreless in the first half.  The fourth quarter was more of the same with the US blowing the game open and winning by a final score of 119-76

Slovenia ran some nice action side out action to get a look late in the shot clock.
